Advantages And Drawbacks Of Genetically Modified Food

Genetically modified food is also known as transgenic food or biotech crop. Foods can be defined as foods that are produced from crops whose genetic makeup has been altered through recombination of DNA to give the plant or crop a desirable trait. The modification is done by molecular technique or genetic engineering. Though others argue that, crops produced through traditional breeding techniques can also be considered as Modified food. These are supposed to grow and bring high yields. More than 20% of the world's population is suffering from hunger.

One of the noblest motivations of Modified crop is that their yields are high and save millions of lives. These crops are designed to be more robust than non-modified crop. They are meant to be resistant to pests, diseases and drought. They have been with us for years. There are a number of plants that we see today that come about as natural, and traditional man-made plant cross-breeding took thousands of years. That is the reason why we find vegetable and fruits in a variety of colors, shapes and taste.

Today, we can see more than 1000 varieties of tomatoes, which prove that the concept of modifying crop has been there for years. The main advantage of GMcrop is that they can combat malnutrition and can answer the need of more nutritious food. Malnutrition is referred to wrong as well as under nutrition. People who are rich in developed countries may have morecrop, but not enough nutrition to keep them stay fit and healthy.

FLORA fruits and vegetables are supposed to have high levels of phenolics and flavonoids. The purple tomatoes we see today have nearly three times the amount of anti-oxidants compared to regular tomatoes. These crops are very good for the environment, as they are grown using organic methods. These crop items are free from chemicals and are less polluted.

transgenic food can even help medicine. They can be used in producing a variety of pharmacological products. GM food is associated with Medical molecular farming, edible vaccines, biopharmaceuticals, etc. in plants. These s are unregulated and are free for all activity. Genetic research and engineering can create plants with the exact desired trait very rapidly with great accuracy.

The new genetically modified plant will gain drought tolerance. For instance - plant genetics can separate the gene that is responsible for drought resistance and transfer it to another plant whose drought resistance is low. The world population is predicted to double in the next 50 years. Ensuring adequate food supply has become a big challenge. biotech food promises to meet the increase food demand in an effective manner.

Advantages of Lap Band Surgery

Even a few years ago, liposuction in India was the most established surgical way of reducing weight and layers of fat from the body. But the scenario has changed a lot in last two decades. With bariatric surgeries making its prominent place in the health care system, all earlier techniques have taken a back seat. Lap band surgery is another of such techniques that has been improving the quality of life by treating obesity and eliminating allied disorders which often pose a life threats to the patients.

Lap band is the common term used for gastric banding. In lap band surgery, a band adjustable in nature is placed at the upper portion of the abdomen by making a laparoscopic incision. This band is made of silicone and is adjusted as per requirement by filling it up with saline with the help of a port placed right under the stomach skin. The process of filling is same as you would blow air in a balloon in shape of a doughnut. The adjustment is done and undone as the capacity of the stomach changes with the change in your food habit and regime. This kind of surgery restricts the food intake as the pouch created by inserting the band is small and you start feeling full with the little amount of food. It slows down the process of food moving from the passage to the intestines.

Lap band surgery can be performed on obese person with a BMI of 40 kg/m2 or in special medical cases where the weight is anywhere between 35 kg/mg2 to 40 kg/m2. In other words, if you are 40 to 45 kilograms above the ideal weight and have a history of failed weight loss procedures including or excluding surgeries. Usually such surgeries are the final resorts for all those who could not succeed in losing weight and return to a normal lifestyle even after dieting, taking weight loss supplements, slogging hard in gymnasiums etc.

The effects of lap band surgery become evident only after the initial phase of healing of operation wound. For best results, you must take rest for first two weeks. If your recovery is fast and uneventful, the result of this surgery will be better. Initially, patient is recommended liquid diet, then on to semi solid and eventually solid. The span of each diet may vary as per the capacity of patient's body and opinion of the doctor. Lap band surgery cures and controls many problems that were tagged along with obesity. Women for whom obesity was a hindrance on the path to conceive, can now plan baby, though consultation would be required regarding adjustment of the band. This is the reason it is regarded as one of safest weight loss surgeries in India.

Advantages of Going Mobile for Research

With the growing number of people going mobile through broadband and wifi services through their smartphones, tablets and many more devices it is undeniable that researchers should start taking advantage of the emerging technologies and find creative ways to gather qualitative data.

Here are the ways as to how mobile technology can be used by researchers in gathering qualitative data that used to consume much time, cost and effort.

Messaging such as Instant Messaging, SMS, Facebook Chat, Twitter, and many more mobile messaging platforms has enabled quick exchanges of information, invites and feedback between participants and moderators. They can easily answer Question and Answer type of conversations, to diary entries, send attachments, instructions, reminders and affirmation seamlessly and in real time at an almost zero cost.In-depth interviews can be conducted and logged on the go easily through mediums such emails and voicemail allowing people to respond to the questions at times that they would find convenient.Smartphones and tablets allow the participants to access applications or go through mobile websites where they can join and participate in without having to log in to a computer or physically go out of their way just to give out their response about a product or service.Through their mobile digital devices participants can input data easily through online forums which they can come back too at any time of the day whenever they find it convenient and continue their activities or conversation as an individual or a group. Through their smartphones they can now also easily make a recording and capture an image or a moment and share it through email right there and then as it occurs.Multi-media approach is now possible enabling researchers to capture every moment that participants have that are relevant to the research in multiple platforms such as photos, videos, and messages and receive them as it is occurring. For the participants this makes it easy for them to participate because these are actions that are seemingly natural and easy for them to do with their mobile devices.Managing of data is now much simpler for the researcher because through assigning usernames, categorizing user characteristics such as demographics, branding, personalities and more as filters, the data being gathered is easily segregated, manipulated and arranged in ways that allow them to interpret data as it occurs or for later use and analysis.

The six advantages mentioned above are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the creative usages of going through the medium of mobile research. In time we are sure to see much more as tools that target this medium shall be developed. As the mobile devices have quickly become and integral part of society redefining how people now interact with each other and their daily lives, it would be wise for researchers to start exploring how these too can help them improve the way research is done. One thing that should be considered is that with any type of research platforms it would be best to approach it with no assumptions about what you can or can't do. But keeping an open mind the data one can gather through this method is sure to reveal itself to be quite valuable.
